Health Promotion and Wellness (HPaW) is the primary provider of health education, prevention, and harm reduction services related to wellness, alcohol, and other drug issues for Northwestern University students. HPaW operates within an Eight Dimensions of Wellness model to provide holistic support for students and guidance for the campus community. Job Summary:

The Health Promotion Specialist delivers high quality, evidence-based and -informed health promotion programs and services to students. This position is primarily student-facing, and will work with individual students and student groups.

Note: Occasional night and weekend work will be required.

Pay: The pay range for the Health Promotion Specialist position is $55,000-59,000 depending on experience, skills, and internal equity.


Principal Accountabilities:

Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) 50%

  • Program Administration
  • Service Delivery

Brief Motivational Interventions and Consultation 25%

  • Provide brief motivational interventions on a range of health and wellness-related topics, including, but not limited to sleep, stress reduction, alcohol and tobacco cessation, and exercise.
  • Provide alcohol and other drug misuse consultation.
  • Provide wellness coaching.

Prevention Programming 25%

  • Facilitate educational programs for student groups on a variety of wellness topics, including but not limited to mental health promotion, stress reduction, and alcohol and other drug misuse prevention.
  • Assist in administration of group educational programs.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Training/experience in motivational interviewing.
  • Experience and/or training in alcohol and other drug misuse prevention or intervention with college students or young adults.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.


Minimum Competencies:

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to handle confidential information sensitively and with integrity.
  • Awareness of personal boundaries and ability to provide self-care.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and social justice


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in public health, social work, counseling or a related field.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in providing BASICS or Brief Motivational Interventions (BMI) preferred.
  • CHES/MCHES preferred.


Preferred Competencies:

  • Understanding of college student development.
  • Understanding of harm reduction in substance use prevention.
