POSITION SUMMARY
The Certified Nursing Assistant interacts directly with patients, providing comfort and transportation, monitoring their vital sign, assisting with daily living needs, and assisting the nurses in the treatment and care of the patients in accordance with the established methods, protocols, policies and procedures of the hospital.  The CNAs responsibilities encompass compliance with The Joint Commission standards, CMS, OSHA, IDPH and state regulations.

Position Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains and respects all patient rights and care for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner.
  • Maintains and respects all patient related information (confidentiality).
  • Provides patients’ personal hygiene based on hospital policies, procedures and protocols at the discretion of and based on the judgment of a Registered Nurse by giving bedpans, urinals, commodes, baths, shampoos and shaves; assisting with travel to the bathroom; helping with showers.
  • Provides for activities of daily living by assisting with meals, feeding patients as necessary; ambulating, turning, and positioning patients; providing fresh water and nourishment between meals.
  • Provides adjunct care by administering enemas, nonsterile dressing, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz baths; applying restrains; discontinuing IV and urinary catheters.
  • Maintains patient stability by checking and documenting vital signs, weight, and intake and output.
  • Reports to a Registered Nurse any changes observed in the condition or behavior of the patient.
  • Completes patient care assignments in a timely manner and assists others as needed.
  • Makes rounds to patients, anticipates the patient’s needs, and answers/responds to the patient call-light or pages.
  • Transports patients to and from various areas as necessary.
  • Helps to prepare the unit, patient room, and patient bed for receiving patient admissions.
  • Assist in and as necessary, accompanies patients in the admission, transfer, and discharge process.
  • Handles and cares for the patient’s clothing and personal property (including prosthetic devices, hearing aids, dentures, glasses, contact lenses, etc.) from admission through discharge and documents patient belongings.
  • Collects, labels, and transports specimens to proper areas, as requested.
  • Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of patient rooms, utility rooms, supply and storage areas, and kitchen.
  • Ensures operation of equipment assigned to patient care by completing preventative maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions and reports problems and or orders services as needed.
  • Maintains supplies inventory by checking expiration dates and stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders of supplies.
  • Uses supplies and patient care related items in a cost efficient manner.
  • Attends at least 80% of all scheduled unit meetings held, and read the meeting minutes.
  • Assists in the orientation of new personnel to the unit.  Participates in the peer interview process.
  • Supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Nursing Department.
  • Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned within scope of practice.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • Preferred Level: High School Diploma or GED. Any equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered
  • Must have completed a Nursing Assistant Program and be certified in the state of Illinois.

Position Criteria 
  • CPR certified
  • Previous Medical/Surgical experience desirable.
  • Must show competency of those skills designated by the Manager of Inpatient Services by written exam and/or demonstration. 
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • The ability to operate designated computer equipment.
  • Is pro-active in seeking out additional tasks when assignments are complete.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • The ideal candidate must be able to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Requires long periods of standing at times.
  • Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
  • Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Frequent repositioning of patients.
  • Ability to perform CPR – a strenuous activity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work accurately and effectively in oral and written directions and communication.
  • Enjoys working with people and works cooperatively with other hospital staff.
  • Constant kneeling, stooping, bending, twisting and occasional need to lift patients
  • Medium Lifting, generally lifting not more than 50 lbs. maximum with assistance, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
