Position Description

POSITION TITLE: Lead Day Camp Counselor

LOCATION/DEPT: Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

REPORTS to (TITLE): Summer Day Camp Director

STATUS TYPE: Temporary Full Time

he Vision of the Chicago Kroc Center is to impact individuals, families and seniors of the Southside while building community, promoting excellence, motivating wellness, teaching character, and encouraging faith.

The Lead Day Camp Counselor will ensure that Campers are provided a safe, enriching, and stimulating environment - promoting program membership and increased involvement in other Kroc Center programs. The lead summer camp counselor is responsible for the supervision, health and safety of an assigned group of children between the ages of 6-12 and may serve in a supervisory capacity in the absence of the Summer Day Camp Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervisory/Administration duties.
    1. Assist Summer Day Camp Director in communicating with parents regarding children's needs and report daily activities.
    2. Assist with staffing, discipline, and incident reports.
    3. Maintain accurate attendance and incident reports for each child in compliance with state licensing. Maintain records of the number of children in the assigned group at all times.
    4. Assist in the planning and implementation of the camp program under the direction of the Summer Day Camp Director.
    5. Assist in the ordering for the camp program under the direction of the Summer Day Camp Director.
    6. Prepare and clean up needed supplies and materials for daily activities.
    7. Work with camp leadership to train staff in organized games and activities, including but not limited to, swimming, teambuilding activities, and arts and crafts.
    8. Attend and actively participate in all trainings, staff meetings, and events.
    9. Follow emergency procedures as stated in the staff manual and based on trainings received such as CPR/First Aid/AED, blood borne pathogens, and pool safety. Serve in a supervisory capacity in the absence of the Summer Day Camp Director.
    10. Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Summer Day Camp Director and branch administration to assure the overall success of the program and safety of the children and staff.
  2. Provide campers a safe environment.
    1. Enforce all rules that pertain to the Camp and facility on a constant basis.
    2. Follow Safe from Harm Guidelines/Procedures.
    3. Adhere to check-in and check-out policy.
    4. Maintain a vigilant watch on campers in all program areas
    5. Perform regular head counts and keep an accurate attendance list of assigned children.
    6. Follow and adhere to discipline procedures.
    7. Make sure clean-up program areas and maintain equipment in a safe manner.
  3. Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants.
    1. Complete incident reports when necessary
    2. Keep camper issues confidential. Do not share issues with other campers, parents or patrons, news organizations, or staffers who are not involved.
    3. Ensure the safe use of the facility and execution of activities through enforcement of facility and activity-specific regulations and insuring that only authorized patrons participate.
    4. Protect, maintain, and be accountable for group camp supplies such as assigned radio, folder and group backpack.
    5. Report any and all facility defects/problems to Summer Day Camp Director
  4. Adhere to dress code at all times.
    1. May be required to wear activity appropriate attire (i.e., swimwear for Aquatics, etc.)
  5. Provide enriching and stimulating environment.
    1. Provide leadership with enthusiasm.
    2. Encourage campers to participate in a variety of disciplines.
    3. Recognize the spiritual need of individuals, which may require referral to the Summer Day Camp Director.
    4. Assist in athletic program area preparation/clean up and/or additional shifts within the athletics department. Assist in supervision of gymnasium, field and special events and game room areas.
    5. Build assets in program participants.
  6. Provide excellent customer service and communication with parents.
    1. Greet campers and parents, by name, enthusiastically.
    2. Interface respectfully with peers, supervisors and customers of various socio-economic backgrounds. Handle disputes with participants, parents and students in a professional manner with guidance of Summer Day Camp Director.
    3. Communicate any disciplinary issues to director and parents.
  7. Encourage Day Camp participants to the next level of participation at the Kroc Center.
    1. Have knowledge of other Kroc Center programs and answer questions.
    2. Promote membership and classes.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma/ GED.
  • 2 years' experience working with children.
  • Experience with a computer based work environment and a working knowledge of Word.
  • 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • An ability to work with confidential material.
  • Enthusiastic about recreational programs and arts programs.
  • Computer knowledge helpful but not necessary.
  • A willingness to promote the mission of The RJKCCC
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certified
  • Safe From Harm Trained within 30 days
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and responsibility skills.
  • Demonstrated professional behavior supportive of leading and counseling others.
  • Is patient, enthusiastic, self-controlled, and dependable.
  • Able to work well with others and follow directions.
