Job Description

Job Summary:

The STS GES Experienced Associate is responsible for basic tax research, tax return preparation and development of reports and analyses that assist in serving clients. Additional responsibilities include learning and developing employment tax knowledge and applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, assisting in recognizing and communicating potential risks, identifying potential changes in the tax policy and applying new policies to tax compliance, and assisting in handling routine questions from federal or state agencies. The Associate also serves as the primary contact for clients, as needed.


Job Duties:

  • Research:
    • Identifies situations in which research is necessary, and provides an outline of the issues as well as the appropriate source of research to be conducted
    • Analyzes researched facts and the sources utilized
    • Composes detailed reports of the research findings
    • Applies firm and professional standards for preparation of written tax advice
  • Tax Compliance:
    • Ensures clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying options for minimizing the clients' compensation-related tax and reporting burdens
  • Tax Consulting:
    • Obtains required client information
    • Accomplishes basic tasks, and documents and organizes work product for review by senior STS Compensation & Benefits professionals
  • Tax Controversy:
    • Reviews assessment notices
    • Monitors client expectations regarding issues of controversy
    • Handles routine questions from federal, state or local agencies with assistance
  • Tax Related Software:
    • Utilizes tax research databases and other tax-related software in the completion of assigned tasks
  • Tax Specialization:
    • Develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding federal, state and local employment taxes
    • Involves and works with firm specialists when client and proposal work related to areas in which the firm has specialists
    • Monitors tax and other regulatory actions regarding employment tax rules and assists in advising clients on compliance strategies
  • Strategy Development:
    • Assists with research of potential tax strategies as well as implementation
    • Understands documentation associated with tax strategies
    • Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects, and provides input improvements
    • Suggests marketing approaches for new ideas
    • Discusses simple tax strategies with clients
    • Builds client relationships, marketing, networking and business development
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, required; OR Bachelors degree in other focus areas and CPA certification, required
  • Master's degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred
  • Juris Doctorate, preferred

Experience:

  • One (1) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, preferred
  • Prior internship or work-study opportunity, preferred
  • Accounting based internship, preferred
  • Leadership experience, preferred
  • Employment tax experience, preferred

License/Certifications:

  • Eligible to sit for the CPA exams; progress towards admission to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction; progress towards Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) certification or progress towards the equivalent of one of these designations upon starting employment, preferred

Software:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, preferred
  • Proficient with standard tax applications and research tools, preferred

Language:

  • N/A

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

Range: $60,000 - $110,000
