Job Description

The Histology Assistant is responsible for accessioning tissue specimens, assisting with the slide and block filing systems, preparing/mailing cases for external consultation, and assisting the Histotechnicians and Histotechnologists in their daily tasks.

Job Relationships
Reports to the Histology Manager

Principal Responsibilities

  • Accession specimens into the laboratory computer using specialized software.
  • Process specimens according to lab procedures.
  • Look up patient orders and answer the telephone in a courteous and helpful manner, and call physician offices for additional information.
  • Retrieve tissue specimens from several departments at Main Campus throughout the day.
  • Handle hundreds of specimens per day, with a high rate of precision.
  • Assist the Histology Manager in solving problems including discrepancies in specimens, requisitions, demographic and billing information.
  • Perform basic histologic functions including embedding, transcription, and coverslipping using manual techniques and automated instruments.
  • Assist in all documentation and clerical functions in the histology lab including accessioning specimens into the computer system, maintaining quality assurance and control records, function logs, workload logs, and slide and cassette files.
  • Assist in preparing cases for external consultation including pulling the correct case and mailing it to the requesting location.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • Previous lab experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have computer experience and be able to type at least 50 words per minute.
  • Must be able to handle heavy workloads and competing demands, in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
  • Must be able to lift occasional loads up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand, bend over, and walk for long periods of time.
