POSITION SUMMARY
A Registered Professional Nurse promotes and restores patient’s health by completing the nursing process; collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members; providing physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families. Employee shall perform nursing functions in accordance with the policies, procedures, and objectives of the Nursing Department. The RNs responsibilities encompasses compliance with The Joint Commission standards, CMS, OSHA, IDPH, the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and state regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains and respects all patient rights and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner.
  • Maintains and respects all patient related information (confidentiality).
  • Assesses physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational needs of the patient and family specifically related to age.
  • Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases and uses available resources in the assessment process with regard to age.
  • Documents an assessment of the patient on admission and updates continuously throughout the hospitalization.
  • Initiates and documents an age specific plan of care based on nursing diagnosis and applies knowledge of specific illness, injuries, and diseases, and human behavior.  Utilizes all available resources in planning care, and consults with other members of the Multidisciplinary Health Care Team.
  • Promotes patient’s independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patients, friends, and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with policies, procedures, rules and regulations; calling for assistance from healthcare support personnel.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and safety policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures; and controlled substance regulations.
  • Documents age specific nursing orders on the nursing care plan, develops realistic short and long term goals specifying expected outcomes and target dates following intervention. 
  • Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments;
  • Continuously updating the plan of care based on ongoing assessments.
  • Transcribes and enters physician orders into the electronic medical record when necessary.
  • Assists in development of discharge planning with regard to age utilizing all available resources.
  • Develops a strong knowledge base of cardiac dysrhythmias, treatment modalities, and algorithms.
  • Assists in the monitoring of patients during special procedures.
  • Responds to Code Blue and Rapid Response situations as assigned within the hospital when able and follows ACLS algorithms.
  • Is self-directed with personal and learning needs on an ongoing basis.  Seeks learning opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means and keeps educational records current.
  • Supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Nursing Department.
  • Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation and teaching of the staff. Participates in the peer interviewing process.
  • Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; also participates in nursing committees and other activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care. 
  • Has attended 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by one or more of the following: attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Ensures operation of equipment assigned to patient care by following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions and reports problems and or orders services as needed.
  • Maintains supplies inventory by checking expiration dates and stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders of supplies.
  • Attends at least 80% of all scheduled unit meetings held, and read the meeting minutes.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned within scope of practice.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education      
  • Must be a graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing
  • Must have current Illinois RN license.

Experience    
  • Must be currently CPR certified.
  • Previous telemetry experience desirable. 
  • Must obtain ACLS and PALS certification within first six months of employment. 
  • Must pass a Telemetry test within the first six months of employment.
  • Must show competency of those skills designated by the Manager of Inpatient Services by exam and/or demonstration. 
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to work under pressure. 
  • Must have good teaching and communication skills.
  • The ability to operate designated computer equipment.
  • Must complete a basic dysrhythmia class annually.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • The ideal candidate must be able to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Requires long periods of standing at times.
  • Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
  • Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Frequent repositioning of patients.
  • Ability to perform CPR – a strenuous activity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work accurately and effectively in oral and written directions and communication.
  • Enjoys working with people and works cooperatively with other hospital staff.
  • Constant kneeling, stooping, bending, twisting and occasional need to lift patients
  • Medium Lifting, generally lifting not more than 50 lbs. maximum with assistance, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
