POSITION SUMMARY
The Emergency Room (ER) nurse is a Registered Professional Nurse accountable for the coordination and delivery of quality, age-appropriate patient care, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.   The ER RN shall perform nursing functions in accordance with the policies, procedures, and objectives of Rochelle Community Hospital (RCH) and RCH’s Nursing Department.

Position Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assesses physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational needs of the patient and family, incorporating age-specific factors. 
  • Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases, how these are affected by age, and uses available resources in the assessment process.
  • Provides a written assessment of the patient on admission, and updates documentation continuously throughout the Emergency Department visit.
  • Maintains and respects all patient rights, and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner.
  • Maintains and respects confidentiality of all patient-related written and verbal information.
  • Summarizes assessment and treatment data, which is documented on the Emergency Department Medical Record, and communicates to other patient care providers when coverage or transfer of care is needed.
  • Utilizes all available resources in planning care, and consults with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team.
  • Adjusts patients’ care as needed, based on ongoing assessments.
  • Assists in development of discharge planning, with attention to age-related needs, utilizing all available resources.
  • Implements age-appropriate care based on physician orders, in accordance with established Policies and Procedures.  Intervenes with appropriate techniques, procedures, and safety precautions.
  • Self-directs personal learning needs on an ongoing basis.  Seeks learning opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means and keeps personal educational records current.
  • Is responsible and accountable to the Manager of Emergency Services for maintaining current BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC and NRP certification as required.
  • Supports the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the hospital and nursing department.
  • Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation, and teaching of staff.
  • Strives for quality in patient care and, as necessary, challenges and/or corrects errors of peers to ensure patient safety and well-being.
  • Accountable for own conduct, and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Participates in and supports research programs, activities, and performance improvement activities.  Also, participates in nursing committees and other activities, which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care. 
  • Attends 20 hours of continuing education bi-annually.
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment assigned to patient care and reports problems and orders service as needed.
  • Maintains mandatory educational requirements based on JCAHO, IDPH, and OSHA standards.
  • Takes responsibility for being informed via attendance at unit meetings, reading emails and other notices, reviewing meeting minutes, etc.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health rules and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education  
  • Must be a graduate of an NLN-accredited School of Nursing and have a current Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license.  

Experience
  • Must be currently BLS certified with ACLS, PALS, TNCC and NRP certification within 6-12 months of hire date.
  • One year of professional experience in a medical setting is preferred.
  • Experience in Emergency or Critical Care is desirable. 
  • Certification as a Trauma Nurse Specialist is desirable. 
  • ENPC certification is desirable.
  • Must show competency of those skills designated by the Manager of Emergency Services by written exam and/or demonstration.  
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to work under pressure. 
  • Must have good teaching and communication skills.
  • The ability to operate designated medical and computer equipment must be attained. 
  • Must be willing to cross-train to at least one other nursing unit, if applicable.

Work Environment/Physical Demands 
  • The ideal candidate must be able to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Requires sitting, standing, and walking a majority of the workday.
  • Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
  • Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Frequent lifting and/or handling of light weight items is likely.
  • Frequent repositioning of patients is expected.
  • Ability to perform CPR is occasionally required—a strenuous activity.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases is possible, and wearing PPE may be required.   
  • Medium Lifting, generally lifting not more than 50 lbs. maximum with assistance, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
