Job Description

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a full-time, mid-level GIS, engineering or planning professional with 5 to 10 years of experience in terrain development, cartography, scripting (e.g., python, matlab, or R), model-builder, or similar automation experience to support engineering and planning projects/ Past experience working on flood hazard analysis, floodplain mapping, vulnerability assessments, risk analyses, and mitigation projects is preferred. This position will be in-office with an option to work remotely at the discretion of team management and project needs after completion of probationary period.


The successful candidate will work under the direction of the GIS Manager and project managers to provide GIS technical services for projects across several of Moffatt & Nichol's business areas (e.g., water, coastal, port, marine, environmental, and transportation).

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead & train small teams to solve geospatial problems and implement complicated technical solutions
  • Develop workflows to meet business needs and manage junior staff to create internal and external deliverables
  • Create cartographic products for permits, reports, presentations and proposals that meet FEMA standards and guidelines for deliverables
  • Develop seamless digital elevation models from terrain and bathymetric data from existing data sources
  • Search for, assess, process and manage data to support GIS and Geospatial projects
  • Automate GIS tasks through script development and modeling tools, especially in Python, ArcPy, MatLab, GDAL and GRASS
  • Perform & document spatial & quantitative analyses as required for project needs with minimal oversight
  • Research, analysis, and drafting for GIS projects
  • Design, development and input quality control for databases that are tailored to the client's end use
  • Draft maps using GIS related software including ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, or QGIS
  • Apply geoprocessing tools for spatial, image, and surface analyses and data transformation
  • Support company GIS standards and provide technical input on all GIS related issues
  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of installed GIS systems
  • Keep informed of changing technology for both hardware and software aspects of the GIS industry (e.g., artificial intelligence / machine learning)
  • Provide training and work direction to entry level GIS technicians, monitor output, and perform other duties as assigned
  • Promote the success of the team through individual initiative, cooperation to achieve common goals and accommodation to change


Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or higher in Geographic Information Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum of two years of experience with FEMA floodplain mapping required
  • 5 to 10 years of GIS experience
  • At least 2 years experience managing geospatial or engineering projects
  • At least 2 years of supervision experience
  • Experience in managing technical staff to create geospatial deliverables
  • Experience with ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, Arc Desktop, ArcGIS Online, etc.)
  • Familiarity with creating standardized metadata for federal projects
  • AutoCAD experience a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, proven experience writing reports and documenting processes for federal projects
  • Understand complex data management for GIS data using a Windows operating system
  • Demonstrated proficiency in procuring, assessing and integrating geospatial data into project work flows
  • Mapping portfolio that demonstrates basic cartographic competency
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
