Description:

The research nurse will apply technical nursing skills and play a critical role in a federally funded study on long COVID. This nurse will consent participants, return results to participants (e.g., labs), perform nursing procedures and conduct other research testing per research protocol. This individual will ensure study compliance with federal regulations. Collaboration with Carle Health Methodist Medical Center, Population Health Sciences in Chicago (UIC), and OSF HealthCare is expected. Conducts study visits with participants utilizing established nursing policies. This can include conducting surveys and performing nursing procedures such as phlebotomy, obtaining biospecimen samples, obtaining informed consent, inserting IVs, and guiding participants to hospital-based procedures. Provides necessary instruction to study participants and other staff such as research coordinators. Communicates with participants including scheduling of/confirmation of appointments, providing medical results to participants and determining next steps for follow-up as applicable, explaining research tests and their function/purpose to participants, and determining the nature of adverse events. Documents research activities including data entry of values obtained during study visits, results of hospital-based tests, communication with participants, and other values relevant to the research team and to the medical record. Participates in meetings with study team locally, regionally, and nationally, including trainings on new procedures or protocol updates, and applies clinical judgment to the implementation of new procedures. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Performs duties listed for the lower level of this series as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  2. Six months of nursing experience in a health care facility (such as a hospital, nursing home, medical clinic, prison, mental health facility, or closely related facilities).
  3. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
  4. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
  5. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
  6. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
