Job Description

General Summary:

The perfusionist provides extracorporeal support under the direction of the cardiac surgeons during open and closed heart surgery through the use of a specialized and essential heart/lung machine. The perfusionist selects appropriate equipment for extracorporeal support and is educated to conduct extracorporeal circulation to ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring and adjusting the necessary variables, taking corrective action through established protocols when abnormal situations arise and keeping the cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologist fully informed. In addition to the operation of the heart/lung machine perfusionists often provide extended, long-term support of patient circulation outside of the operating room environment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conducts extracorporeal circulation, administers medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit according to established procedures and protocols in accordance with hospital policy and upon prescription by a physician.

  • Prepares, operates, and maintains: heart/lung machine, heater/cooler units, blood gas and electrolyte analyzer, cell saver, anticoagulation monitor, VADS, audio/visual imaging and cardiac monitors during cardiac surgery.

  • Maintains an accurate perfusion record for each case performed.

  • Enters patient charges per procedure into hospital billing software. Stores and maintains billing records of all perfusion procedures.

  • Enters perfusion related data and images in Cardiac Surgery Database.

  • Assists in perfusion-related experiments performed in the surgical research laboratory.

  • Evaluates new equipment and perfusion techniques. Orders and stocks supplies as necessary; prepares related paperwork.

  • Accepts on-call availability for emergency procedures, approximately 50% of the year.

  • Instructs student perfusionists. Evaluates and documents performance.

  • Pursues professional growth through continuing education, meetings, and seminars.

  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree in the sciences required for entrance in a CAAHEP accredited school of perfusion. Completion of a CHAAHEP accredited perfusion program.

  • Certification/Licensure/Registration or board eligible for American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and Illinois Licensure.

  • Basic Life Support Certification required: Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Surgery.

  • Maintains State of Illinois license and certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

  • Ability to work varying shifts, rotate days off and work weekends as the rotation requires.

  • Ability to communicate well with medical professionals.

Education

Bachelor's Degree (Required)

(BLS) - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
