Position Overview
Perform routine clinical and clerical tasks to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient medical clinic providing quality care to patients. This is a full-time regular 11.5-month position.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Under the direction of a health care provider (HCP), perform procedures in the clinical area: escort patients to examination rooms; obtain pertinent health information such as height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, reason for visit; perform vision screenings; assist with forms and paperwork; perform eye or ear irrigations; obtain pulse oximeter and peak flow readings; apply dressings; perform EKGs; apply orthopedic supports; assist providers with examinations and procedures.
2. Assist with laboratory procedures as needed and as trained: perform phlebotomy, urine dipsticks, rapid strep screens, monospot tests. Instruct patients in proper collection of urine specimens. Insert IVs for purpose of hydration, if trained to do so.
3. Maintain inventory of clinical supplies including stocking, purchasing and ordering recommendations. This task will include order and credit card reconciliation. The medical assistant will work collaboratively with the other nursing staff to ensure stocking of rooms and clinic supplies as needed
4. Maintain neat, clean patient care areas; sanitize areas per clinic policy; change linens on beds; organize and maintain well-stocked exam and treatment rooms. Assist with opening and closing procedures of the clinic. Assist with clinic maintenance, equipment cleaning, disinfecting, and instrument sterilization procedures as per protocol. Distribute crutches and other orthopedic equipment as directed by HCP and provide proper fitting and patient instructions regarding use and care.
5. Utilizing the Medical Health Information System, schedule follow-up appointments, order lab tests under the direction of the HCP or RN and assist with immunization records.
6. Dispense over-the-counter medication as prescribed by the HCP. Provide
appropriate patient instructions.
7. Under the direction of a medical provider, and as trained, administer vaccines, PPD placement and readings.
8. Maintain supply of patient educational handouts and referral lists.
9. Assist with clinic maintenance, equipment cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization procedures
10. Perform telephone calls to patients with lab results as ordered by HCP. Phone or fax outside pharmacy prescription refills as ordered by HCP. Schedule specialized tests such as ultrasound and CT scan and help arrange urgent appointments with specialists as directed by HCP.
11. Attend continuing education courses, staff meetings, and participate in staff development programs to enhance skills thereby improving patient care and clinic function
12. Update and write clinic policy and procedures as directed
13. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from an accredited medical assistant program, or similar accredited program.
* BLS training
* Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be respectful of the confidential nature of medical information.
* Qualified individual must be able to function in a team environment and demonstrate a professional practice style compatible with and supportive of Marquette University's mission.
* Fast paced environment with frequent standing and walking.
* Lifting up to 25 pounds.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* 2 years of experience in primary care setting preferred.
* Certification or eligibility for certification is recommended as well as experience in primary care, urgent care, or college health setting.
