GENERAL JOB SUMMARY

Sets up and operates grinding machines (Internal Diameter, Outside Diameter) to grind specific aspects of cylindrical and tapered surfaces of races by performing the following duties.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Uses blueprints to ensure grind work is done within expected tolerances
  • Selects grinding wheel and mounts wheel on spindle.
  • Moves controls and reads dial to set angle of workpiece to grinding wheel.
  • Dresses wheel manually or with preset device.
  • Positions and secures workpiece on faceplate, magnetic chuck, or in chuck jaws.
  • Selects and sets grinding wheel speed, work surface speed, and workpiece table travel rate.
  • Positions and tightens stops to set depth of grinding wheel cut and stroke of workpiece table.
  • Moves controls to feed wheel to workpiece manually and automatically.
  • Turns valve handle and directs flow of coolant against wheel and workpiece.
  • Verifies dimensions of ground workpiece for conformance to specifications.
  • Dresses grinding wheel to specified profile for contour grinding.
  • Operates grinding machine (s) to produce parts within specification. Operates grinding machine to rework out of tolerance pieces as needed.
  • Performs all necessary paperwork including (time sheets, SPC charts, PM charts, etc).
  • Support the plant quality systems goals / improvements and productivity goals & improvements within the scope of the job.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Compliance with applicable Company, Corporate, State, and Federal regulations.
  • May be required to perform minor preventative maintenance activities.
  • 5S (Sort, Shine, Set in Order, Standardize, and Sustain) is required of every job.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three months related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of employees of the organization.
  • Math - Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Reasoning - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee is frequently required to walk and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and / or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and / or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to caustic chemicals and to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is variable; however, it is usually loud.
