Position Overview
The Physics Department at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in astroparticle physics for research on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

In 2023, Milwaukee, WI, was named a
The IceCube group at Marquette is a well-established and well-funded group leading both the cosmic ray analyses and the development and testing of new prototype IceAct telescopes for the South Pole. We are also undertaking several new public outreach events. The new postdoc will have the option to participate in some or all of these activities, as desired. This is a very flexible, university-funded position with a great deal of opportunity for creativity, leadership, and learning in a supportive and energetic environment.

The leader of the Marquette group works hard to ensure that postdocs are well-supported and that their work is well-showcased. Previous postdocs in this position have traveled extensively both nationally and internationally to conferences, collaboration meetings and workshops (including to the South Pole for detector upgrades), have had the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses, and have successfully achieved tenure track faculty positions. The Marquette group also has a strong track record of support for physicists from historically underrepresented groups and dual career couples.

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will undertake a variety of activities within IceCube's cosmic ray working group. There are many choices but these activities might include
  • developing, designing, and testing hardware and software for the IceAct telescopes at the South Pole,
  • analyzing data to study the composition and energy spectrum of cosmic rays,
  • and generating simulation to accompany cosmic ray analyses.

The Physics Department at Marquette University is focused on excellence in undergraduate research and teaching, so the successful candidate will also be expected to support undergraduate research students in our lab. There may occasionally be opportunities to teach courses, if desired. (This is not required but is a great opportunity for someone who wants to gain classroom experience.)

The group is also undertaking several outreach activities so the ideal candidate will be interested in helping to coordinate and run these events.
