JOB SUMMARY SEIU 73

DEPARTMENT : RADIOLOGY
HOURS: 8AM-4PM
LOCTION: PROVIDENT HOSPITAL
Performs nuclear medicine examinations at a highly technical level, including special procedures using radiopharmaceuticals under the direction of the Radiologist.

Typical Duties

  • Carefully review the requisition for examinations or treatment as submitted by medical staff. Ensures that patients are receiving the proper radiopharmaceutical by following the proper procedures per departmental protocols. Presents any questions to the Department Radiologist.
  • Prepares radiopharmaceuticals following specified instructions for each required procedure, selection, calculation and counting of isotopes for administration of patients. Sets up proper positions for examinations with least discomfort or distress to the patients. If necessary, uses sandbags, binders and special apparatus to maintain the required position.
  • Operates ionization chamber, Geiger-Mueller Counter, scintillation apparatus to maintain the required position.
  • Records technical data used for daily QA, and during patient exams. Cleans equipment and report any system failure to Clinical Engineering and Department Administration.
  • Computes results of nuclear medical procedures, calculates results using electric calculator, and nomograms, following specified statistical procedures. Post these results on appropriate forms and route results to physician for interpretation.
  • Assists with training nuclear medical technologist students including demonstration and other related training.
  • Covers on call.
  • Cleans up and reports and spills of Radiopharmaceuticals to Department Physicist (RSO) and/or Nuclear Medicine Safety Technician for decontamination.
  • Reviews training plans, assists in set up training classes, prepares manuals, outlines, lectures, demonstrations, tests and other training material.
  • Assists with supervision, makes out schedule and receives special instructions from medical physician. Gives instructions from medical officer. Performs instructions as provided by medical staff for handling of special exams, not within the routine procedures.
  • Observes to see that all procedures are done and assists with working out satisfactory solutions.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Nuclear Medicine or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in Nuclear Medicine (Must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine
  • Licensed by Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) (Must provide proof at time of interview)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation of nuclear instruments and the physical composition of radionuclides, to minimize radiation hazard to patients, self, and other personnel.
  • Must have working knowledge of radiological mathematics, basic radiation physics, radiation units, and radiation protection.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged
