Robert Young Center - Outpatient Psychiatry

Medical Assistant

Full-Time + Benefit

M-F, 8-5 - No weekends/ holidays

The Medical Assistant (MA) is supervised by the Manager, Outpatient Nursing Services Psychiatry and provides care to clients utilizing the Robert Young Center principles of Trauma Informed Care. The MA supports the provider by performing a variety of tasks related to coordinating treatment plans and following clients through the treatment process. The MA delivers customer service and works cooperatively with other departments. The MA may train students assigned to the department. The MA provides crisis intervention, maintains accurate clinical documentation, and demonstrates Trinity's principles and values when interacting with clients, families, visitors, physicians and coworkers.

Responsibilities

Care Coordination

  • Assures that all clients receive clinically sound information and ongoing care for behavioral health needs.
  • Performs client assessments by checking vital signs, a physical exam by measuring height and weight, and obtains the client's history by asking questions about conditions, medications, and allergies.
  • Collects information and communicates medication requests and client problems to the provider.
  • Responds to phone calls for crises intervention by providing brief direction, recommendations, and crises intervention.
  • Requests consultation with social workers and therapists for clients when necessary.
  • Delivers high quality care appropriate to the age and educational level of the client.

Clinical Excellence

  • Maintains effective and organized systems to ensure timely client flow.
  • Maintains accurate, concise, current clinical documentation. This includes but is not limited to all phone conversations, requests from the client, prescriptions, changes in the clinical conditions and all consultations with providers.
  • Identifies available support systems to meet the needs of each individual client.
  • Assist Robert Young Center clients and families by making contact with community agencies.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with the medical, educational, and social services community.

Client Education

  • Utilizes a holistic approach to determine teaching methods appropriate to the individual client.
  • Provides psycho-education to clients and families regarding their illness, medications, and/or treatment plan to supplement information provided by health care professionals.
  • Evaluate the client's understanding of information provided and ability to follow through.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited MA program or two years Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) experience.

Experience:

  • Two years' mental health experience, preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, psychological approaches, and psychotropic medications.
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the age and diagnosis of the client.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills (orally and in writing) and presents self in a professional manner.
  • Able to accurately collect and assess information, understand ethical standards of behavioral healthcare, and utilize teaching/learning theories.
  • Able to establish effective consultative relationship with health care providers, outside agencies, co-workers, and the community.
  • Able to work sensitively with clients.
  • Able to handle multiple priorities, maintain composure under stress, and adapt to a fast paced changing environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer programs including Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) applications
