Job Description

Reporting to the Manager of Mammography with accountability to the team facilitator and the team, performs routine screening, diagnostic and special view mammography to provide physicians and radiologist with information in the diagnosis of breast related disease. Performs related clerical and service duties.


1. Ensures that patients are properly prepared for mammography and automated whole breast ultrasound procedures and explains procedures and exams to patients with appropriate instructions. Obtains and documents patient's medical history. Positions patient for exam and performs routine, special view and diagnostic mammograms applying compression when required.

2. Performs bone density imaging on patients. Follows all procedures related to appropriate bone density imaging, explaining procedures and verifying documentation of patients.

3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, treat and care for adult and geriatric patients; implements assessment/treatment/care based on the developmental stages of the patient. Involves family/guardian in plan of care and conducts patient and family education, as appropriate, considering the developmental needs of the patient. Utilizes and promotes AIDET concepts in all customer interactions.

4. Retrieves medications that are not controlled substances.

5. Processes images and verifies quality.

6. Reports any procedure and x-ray equipment malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor. Routinely cleans equipment after each use and assists in maintaining adequate levels of supplies in work areas.

7. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.


Qualifications - External

1. Graduate of an accredited school in Radiologic Technologyrequired.

2. ARRT certification and current ARRT registrationrequired.

3. ARRT Mammography certification and current ARRT registration required.

4. Current Illinois Emergency Management Agency licenserequired.

5. One-year experience as a general radiographer is preferred; on the job training is provided; experience in mammography preferred.

6. Current CPR certification through the American Heart Association required.

7. Knowledge of and/or experience in the correct use of body mechanics.

8. The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively will patients who may be anxious or confused and to interact with physicians and other hospital staff.

9. The analytical ability to determine proper patient positioning and to determine quality of exams performed. Advanced level positioning skills in addition to routine mammography.

10. The communication skills necessary to inform patients regarding examination procedures.
