Job/Internship Description
Intern, Analog/RF IC Design - Summer 2024
Location:

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL, US, 60004

pSemi Corporation is a Murata company driving semiconductor integration. pSemi builds on Peregrine Semiconductor's 30-year legacy of technology advancements and strong IP portfolio but with a new mission-to enhance Murata's world-class capabilities with high-performance semiconductors. With a strong foundation in RF integration, pSemi's product portfolio now spans power management, connected sensors, optical transceivers, antenna tuning and RF frontends. These intelligent and efficient semiconductors enable advanced modules for smartphones, base stations, personal computers, electric vehicles, data centers, IoT devices and healthcare. From headquarters in San Diego and offices around the world, pSemi's team explores new ways to make electronics for the connected world smaller, thinner, faster and better.

Job Summary

Intern will verify (in simulation) and validate (with measurements) large analog/RF IC design over various operating conditions and modes of operation. The specific product class is Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFIC) with digital control and analog/mixed-signal (AMS) interfaces. Tasks may include root-cause of failures or development of improvements to meet specifications. The candidate will support products during the entire product life cycle from product definition through product release to end-of-life. As part of a cross-functional product development team the candidate will support other essential disciplines including characterization, production engineering, and test engineering.

Roles & Responsibilities

This position has responsibility for:

  • Circuit Analysis: understand principles of circuit operation, derive mathematical descriptions, understand trade-offs, prescribe improvements
  • Data Analysis: harness results of tests, determining pass/fail criterion, statistical analysis, hypothesis testing
  • Modeling: analyze application of solution and drive non-idealities back to simulation/measurement
  • Automation: Define, architect, and implement automation suite to simulate design functionality over modes of operation, process, temperature, voltage, and other environmental conditions
  • Test Development: aid in construction of directed tests, schematic entry of tests, definition of outputs, manual simulations, and script-based simulations
  • Data Visualization: plot outputs, group and annotate outputs

Competency Requirements

In order to perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Critical Thinking: Skilled at finding logical flaws in arguments and plans; identifies problems and solutions that others might miss; provides detailed insight and constructive criticism into problems and complex situations
  • Working with Ambiguity: Achieves forward progress in the face of poorly defined situations and/or unclear goals; able to work effectively with limited or partial information
  • Displaying Technical Expertise: Keeps his/her technical skills current; effectively applies specialized knowledge and skills to perform work tasks; understands and masters the technical skills, knowledge, and tasks associated with his/her job; shares technical expertise with others.
  • Driving for Results: Aggressively pursues challenging goals and objectives; willingness to put in considerable time and effort to accomplish objectives; takes a highly focused, goal driven approach toward work
  • Making Accurate Judgments and Decisions: Bases decisions on a systematic review of relevant facts and information; avoids making assumptions or rushing to judgment; provides clear rationale for decisions

Minimum Qualifications (Experience and Skills)

  • Classes in analog circuit design and circuit analysis
  • Classes or experience with circuit simulators (Cadence spectre, or any SPICE)
  • Classes or experience with RF design concepts (S-parameters, matching, IP, Noise Figure)
  • Knowledge of RF and analog circuit concepts, including circuit analysis, bias, gain, linearity, noise, small-signal vs large-signal behavior, power, and time-domain vs frequency-domain analysis
  • Understanding CMOS/SOI processing, device physics, IC development process
  • Understanding of digital programming concepts such as truth tables, decoders, register maps, and serial interfaces
  • Strength in documentation clarity and completeness
  • Willingness to collaborate, take initiative to solve challenges, humble approach to problem-solving
  • Knowledge of interpreted (scripting) languages such as Ruby or Python, especially for data analysis and task automation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Classes in RF circuit design or electromagnetic design/analysis
  • Classes in digital design or mixed-signal design/analysis
  • Classes or experience with circuit simulators (Cadence Spectre, ADS, or any SPICE)
  • Classes or experience with electromagnetic simulators (HFSS, EMX, Momentum, Sonet, etc.)

Education Requirements

  • BSEE in progress (must be completing 3+ yr)
    or
  • MSEE enrolled/in-progress

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
