Position Title: Food Cook Intake Specialist

Job Summary: This position will include managing pantry operations as well as food service planning, preparation, serving, and clean up in the Corps Community Building.

Reports To: Shelter Director

Supervises: Volunteers who support Corps Shelter Food Programs when applicable.

Qualifications:

A current Food Protection Managers Certification and/or the willingness as well as ability to obtain said certification is required. Candidate must possess good communication skills, be pleasant and able to work with all types of people. Experience in planning, preparing, and serving meals for large groups is necessary. Must be able to manage time and tasks serving meals as scheduled.

Candidates must have a passion for fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army and must be articulate in presenting the same to others.

Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry and annual motor vehicle check with a valid driver's license.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

Skills:

  • Team player, self-starter, and perform well with minimal supervision.
  • Must have an interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures, holding others accountable to the same.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and work as a cooperative team member.
  • Demonstrated awareness of budget resources and cost control and budget compliance.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including demonstrated experience in using email, MS Office applications, and Internet.
  • Must be able to workdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary. Especially in emergent situations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Planning menu with approval of the Shelter Director for weekly meals for Shelter clients, Cold Cot Clients, and other special event meals.
  • Ordering food for upcoming meals with approval of the Corps Officers.
  • Preparation, cooking, serving, and clean up of all Shelter meals in the shelter Kitchen.
  • Keep Shelter kitchen, Shelter kitchen pantry, walk-ins, kitchen storage areas organized and clean.
  • Must have knowledge of proper food storage, rotation, and sanitations for all food stuffs and products and comply with date labeling requirements.
  • Must be able to supervise both kitchen and pantry volunteers in a pleasant and productive manner.
  • See that all food both donated and purchased is unloaded, sorted, and stored properly.
  • Ensure that all food is handled properly.
  • Participate in community food drives including but not limited to the Mail Carrier Food Drive in May, and others that may benefit The Salvation Army.
  • Be familiar and knowledgeable of community food resources including food banks.
  • Coordinate with Shelter Assistant Director, Food Pantry Lead, and Corps Officers for selection and ordering of food products from food banks.
  • Provide food assistance to clients within established guidelines.
  • Generate statistical information to be included in the monthly statistical reports.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere through appropriate conflict management, courteous demeanor, and professional and appropriate communication practices.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army's "Safe from Harm" Certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned related to Shelter Kitchen, Food Pantry, Warehouse, and Corps Community Center operations.

Some travel is necessary for food order pick-ups and may be required for trainings.

Position Ranking:

  • Regular Part Time, Non-Exempt

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

This Position is required to do basic business and office work. To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to talk and listen, stand, walk, sit, and use hands. Individual must be able to regularly lift to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to one hundred pounds. The use of Office and Computer Equipment is necessary. Vision abilities will require close vision. Work may be performed indoors and occasionally require outdoors to attend meetings and support food drive efforts as well as holiday food distribution. There is moderate to high noise levels for this position.
