Job Description

Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are over 2,000 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.

The Fermilab Accelerator Directorate (AD) is seeking applications for an Associate Scientist position on the staff of the AD External Beam Delivery Department. Ph.D. scientists of exceptional talent with least two (2) years of post-doctoral experience will be considered for this position. The successful candidate will be involved in the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of the Fermilab Muon Campus. The initial focus of this position will be preparation of the Muon Campus for running the Mu2e experiment. The Mu2e experiment is an intensity frontier experiment that will search for the coherent conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. Observation of this process would be a clear indication of physics beyond the standard model. In the long term, it is anticipated that there will be opportunities for involvement in a wide range of accelerator research and development activities in the Fermilab portfolio of accelerator physics.

This position has equivalent seniority to a university assistant professorship. This position is for an initial term of three years with a possible extension to a second three-year term. These initial terms are followed by an opportunity for an appointment to a term of indefinite duration on the Fermilab scientific staff.
As an organization, Fermilab is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining diverse talent and cultivating an inclusive work environment that supports scientific, technological, and operational excellence. Fermilab and the Wilson Fellowship Committee value candidates who show potential for growth, scientific leadership, and a commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusion. The successful candidate will be expected to respect and value individual differences and support an equitable and inclusive laboratory environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations.

Education and Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Physics
  • Two or more years of post-doctoral experience (or equivalent) in accelerator physics
  • Experience with modeling and assessment of accelerator radiological shielding. Familiarity with modeling software such as MARS and/or FLUKA is essential.
  • Experience with accelerator and beamline lattice modeling. Familiarity with modeling software including MAD X, OptiM, and G4 Beamline is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated skills with particle beam measurements and analysis of beam measurement data
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of a team in research and operational environments, often with tight schedule constraints
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and project leadership
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication
  • Possess the potential to contribute to the Laboratory and broader scientific community in a way that will subsequently lead to an appointment as a permanent member of the Fermilab scientific staff.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participation in beam commissioning for the Mu2e experiment. Specifically, this will involve commissioning the Delivery Ring resonant extraction system and the out-of-time beam extinction system.
  • Development of commissioning plans for various Muon Campus systems.
  • Participation in project reviews
  • Presentation of work at workshops, conferences, and collaboration meetings
  • Serves on Laboratory and professional committees as appropriate. May lecture and teach in a related field of science.

Application Instructions
Interested candidates should submit via Academic Jobs Online: 1) Cover letter, 2) Curriculum Vitae, 3) Research Statement, 4) Three or More Reference Letters (to be submitted by the reference writers at the AJO site).
