Role Summary

The Senior Counsel, Real Estate & Construction is within the Corporate and Commercial Department in the Real Estate and Construction group. The Real Estate and Construction group handles all real estate and construction activities for the parent company Rivian Automotive, Inc. and all wholly owned or managed subsidiaries. The Real Estate and Construction group handles master services agreements, service orders, work orders, change orders, leases, subleases, purchases, license agreements, easements and essentially all legal documents that relate to real property or the improvement of real property.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage internal customer relations to ensure collaboration, creating a Team environment.
  • Provide strategic support to the Real Estate and Facilities team on acquisition, optimization and build out of Rivian's real estate portfolio.
  • Work with the Procurement team on architecture, engineering, and construction strategy to support Rivian facilities.
  • Perform documentation reviews to provide accurate and timely guidance to internal client on rights, obligations and/or restrictions contained in title reports, existing lease documents, easement agreements and other facility related agreements.
  • Work with the teams acquiring, leasing, designing, engineering, constructing, and developing Rivian facilities.
  • Advise on and support resolution of conflicts that arise from real estate, design, engineering, or construction agreements.
  • Identify, communicate, and minimize risks related to design, engineering, and construction contracts.
  • Perform front-line legal work, including drafting and negotiating a variety of legal documents, including but not limited to, office and industrial leases and subleases; amendments; purchase and sale agreements; construction, design and engineering contracts; license agreements, easements and facility use agreements.
  • Assist with property due diligence issues, including but not limited to reviewing title reports, surveys, environmental reports, zoning issues, land use issues and entitlements.
  • Support continuous improvement of the Real Estate and Construction legal team by identifying and implementing new processes, templates, playbooks, training materials and collaborating with internal business clients to develop and implement streamlined policies, processes, and guidelines.
  • Manage outside counsel, in a cost-effective manner, to achieve Rivian's goals and objectives.
  • Work on special projects as assigned by your supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school.
  • Must be an active member, in good standing, with a State Bar Association.
  • Six (6) years of commercial real estate and construction experience is required.
  • A combination of corporate and law firm experience in supporting real estate and construction projects is preferred.
  • Automotive or manufacturing experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple multi-faceted real estate and construction projects simultaneously and on expedited schedules.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills to express complex legal matters in clear, concise, business-friendly language.
  • A strong record of effective cross-group collaboration, as well as the ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to recognize and weigh business and legal risks, think strategically, and advance creative, legally sound, practical solutions in the context of business goals.
  • Strong ability to negotiate and find resolution to terms and disputes.
  • Ability to work simultaneously with multiple cross-functional clients.
  • Typical working hours, 8 hours per day - work schedule is flexible - typical 8-hour schedule is flexed between the hours of 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM (local time).
  • Travel requirements - as needed based on specific project workload.
  • Must be assigned to a local Rivian office but day to day activities are typically remote.

Pay Disclosure

Salary Range for Palo Alto, CA based applicants: $186,000 - $232,000 annually (Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location and other factors permitted by law).

Salary Range for Irvine, CA based applicants: $171,000 - $213,000 annually (Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location and other factors permitted by law).

Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
