The Covia Analytical Services Lab, located in Ottawa, IL has an immediate opening for an Analytical Lab Supervisor. The Analytical Lab Supervisor plays an active role in daily operations at the lab and will be responsible for managing laboratory personnel and project workflow. This individual will also be responsible for managing drill core projects, establishing plant flow charts, assisting in the development of procedures, troubleshooting internally and externally, participating in annual plant audits, writing technical reports, and working with the LIMs system. Additionally, works closely with Plant Operations, quality control, and Sales Departments to provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance.

The successful incumbent will have the following Key Accountabilities:

  • Coordinate and direct activities of subordinates to achieve optimum rates of output for all projects.
  • Train new laboratory technicians, plan annual goals and maintain documentation for direct reports.
  • Assess and evaluate raw plant materials, become an expert in industry standards and their requirements.
  • Assist in troubleshooting issues with lab equipment, personnel, work methods, productivity, and external plant issues and audits.
  • Work with plants to develop annual testing schedules and provide training if needed.
  • Proficient in operation of Laboratory Information Management system (LIMS) and able to work efficiently with Labware team to continue developing the software.
  • Establish, develop, and review laboratory procedures annually.
  • Support in product or manufacturing issues working closely with Production & Sales to resolution.
  • Maintain and organize inventory of sample products for internal or customer evaluation.
  • Analyze data and provide technical summary/reports internally.
  • Focused and committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety in and out of the lab and providing leadership.

The successful incumbent will have the following Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, concentration in sciences or technical fields preferred.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience would be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Proficiency in wet chemical and analytical test methods required.
  • Foundry, mining, or mineral industry knowledge preferred.
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of computers with a proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proven project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of quality systems and application in production settings.
  • Highly collaborative, team player, self-motivated and goal oriented.
  • Travel 4-6 times a year required.
  • Occasional lifting required.
