Job Description
Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full time Roadway Engineer position for our Springfield, IL office. Our new team member will be expected to take a leading role in the advancement of Hanson's technical abilities in the field of transportation engineering and serve as a technical leader for a broad variety of transportation engineering projects.

Position Profile

This person is expected to work as part of multidisciplinary design teams to plan and execute transportation projects for a variety of clients including local governments, state departments of transportation, and private industry throughout Illinois and beyond. Projects are likely to include reconstruction of highways, major urban thoroughfares, county road improvements, multiuse paths, rail grade crossings, signing, pavement marking and channelization design, and traffic control plans for construction. Position requires the ability to serve as key member of the project design team providing direction and supervision to junior level staff in the areas of roadway design. Position requires the ability to work on a variety of road related projects, take direction from multiple project managers, and coordinate with other staff.

A Day in the Life of a Roadway Engineer at Hanson

Here's a snapshot of what you would do in this role:

  • Assist in leading Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) or Municipal/Local Government transportation projects primarily in Central and Southern Illinois.
  • Perform and review complex engineering calculations.
  • Prepare and oversee engineering design/analysis and plans/construction contract documents, as well as author technical documents such as engineering reports and special provisions.
  • Collaborate with senior technical staff and other project disciplines on significant projects across the country.
  • Provide direction and mentoring to engineering support staff.
  • Prepare calculations, quantity takeoffs and opinions of probable cost.
  • Managing project performance for roadway tasks (staffing, budget, schedule, and quality assurance).
  • Visit project sites to review existing conditions, identify potential challenges, and develop alternative solutions and recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Assist with project/contract proposals and presentations for project pursuits.
  • Assist in development of scope/fee documents required for technical tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

We feel the following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:

Technical Skills:

  • Working knowledge of IDOT Local Roads and BDE design procedures.
  • Experience with Microstation and PowerGeopak (OpenRoads or Connect Edition) software.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D a plus.

Soft Skills:

  • Comfortable communicating complex technical concepts to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders.
  • Building effective relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member to problem solve and learn new technical skills.
  • Interest in experiencing a variety of assignments is important.

Education/Experience:

The minimum qualifications for this position are:

  • A Bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in the transportation engineering field.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Illinois or the ability to obtain within 6 months.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with IDOT, roadway plans and standards and Municipal/Local Government transportation standards and related discipline projects.
  • Experience on projects with complex geometric components.
  • Participation with technical society organizations.
  • Working with and managing project staff.
