Job Description

General Summary of Position Responsibility:

Performs routine and specialized tests in one or various sections of the clinical laboratory, independently or with minimal supervision. Serves as a resource person and clinical/technical expert and role model. Provides a timely communication link between staff and leadership. The position actively supports the Hospital's and the department's Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals, through modeling of appropriate behavior and by providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Identifies source and nature of test problems, and makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action.
  2. Assures that quality control criteria are met, and adheres to established laboratory policies in handling hazardous substances. Recognizes the clinical significance of each test performed, and reports results within established time-frames.
  3. Identifies and correlates possible sources and nature of test interference/problems, and makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action, based on test theory and knowledge. Establishes and maintains data collection of the quality management system.
  4. Assists the director, administrator, and medical director in assuring compliance with governmental, accreditation, and hospital standards. Coordinates and documents corrective action as necessary.
  5. Coordinates and assists the laboratory's medical director with laboratory training of medical technology students, fellows, residents, new laboratory personnel, and other hospital professionals in laboratory testing as needed.
  6. Assists the laboratory's medical director in preparing, reviewing, and revising the laboratory's procedure manual. Facilitates in the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols.
  7. Ensures the accuracy and completeness of results, quality control/quality assurance activities, and documentation.
  8. Develops and maintains relationships with laboratory service customers and suppliers.
  9. Assists leadership relative to capital and operating budget, variance analysis, and trends in productivity, volume, acuity, and service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree and demonstration of progressive acceptable clinical laboratory experience (i.e., specialist certification, documented increasing clinical laboratory responsibility and/or documented continuing education in a chosen clinical specialty area). MT(ASCP) and/or NCCLS certification or appropriate sectional categorical certification, i.e. BB(ASCP), H(ASCP), or C(ASCP) or eligible. Demonstrates technical and clinical expertise. Excellent communication required.
