Listed as one of the top 10 historical venues in Chicago, The Murphy was built in 1923 for the American College of Surgeons and was designed to host their meetings and serve as a center for education in surgery. This gorgeous building is reminiscent of the Chapelle de Notre-Dame de Consolation the Commemorative Monument to the Bazar de la Charite Fire located in Paris, France. The Murphy has been refurbished to its original ornate beauty and splendor and is now ready to host events.


The Murphy staff manages weddings, fashion shows, concerts, corporate events, product launches along with other events. The objective is to provide The Murphy Intern will a well-rounded hospitality and event management experience.

Summary



We are currently seeking a high caliber Interns for summer 2013. Prospective Interns should have excellent academic profiles, strong analytical skills, outstanding professional track records, and a strong desire to work in the hospitality industry.



The ideal interns will have a strong interest and experience in the field of hospitality. In this internship you will gain hands-on experience working with the staff of The Murphy and The American College of Surgeons. You will be paired with a senior Murphy staff member and learn the ins and outs of working in event management.



We're looking for candidates who are curious, proactive and able to work independently and as a member of a team. You'll be most successful if you're comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-capacity environment and have excellent organization skills.



Projected Start/end Dates: May/June 2013 to August/September 2013



Hours/Days: Tuesday-Friday - 9:00 am - 5pm. Interns should be available for weekend and evening work.



Core Responsibilities



  • Assist with event scheduling and coordination
  • Assist with event staff supervision
  • Assist planning and execution of dinner parties, fashion shows, weddings, cocktail receptions, product launches, press conferences, town hall meetings
  • Assist with coordination of all vendor schedules - day of event arrivals
  • Assist with direct and indirect marketing of the venue
  • Assist with database management of all events
  • Assist with website management
  • Assist with report retrieval and analysis of events
  • Assist with pre and post event communication with client
  • Assist with selection of photo for advertising materials
  • Assist with coordination of social media Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Assist with coordination of on-line marketing sites

Internship Requirements


  • Completion of 2nd year of a top-tier Hospitality program by June 2013
  • Strong hospitality skills
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task responsibilities or projects
  • Self-starter able to structure own work and work independently
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Be able to work flexible hours, weekends and evening
  • Excellent communication, organization and time management skills


Physical/Work Environment- Fast paced with significant people interaction. This position is required to do occasional light to moderate physical work, remain stationary for some periods of time; occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel or crouch; frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands, as required in special event settings equipment. Must be able to walk up and down stairs and lift up to 30+ lbs. The work environment for this position may include hospitality environment with a low to high noise level.
